The Audubon Center at Debs Park uses only power generated on site, meaning the facility operates entirely off-grid. The Center is designed to use 70% less water than a comparable conventional building, and to treat all wastewater on site. More than 50% of the building materials were manufactured locally, and more than 97% of construction debris was recycled.

This project integrates a number of energy and water saving features, including rooftop photovoltaic solar panel arrays and reclaimed water irrigation for the drought tolerant landscaping.

Located on a former brownfield site, this project is part of recent efforts by the city of Oakland to revitalize the downtown area.

Palo Verde is comprised of 490,000 square feet of graduate student housing on the University of California, Irvine campus. Due to the project’s close proximity to the ocean, all 14 buildings that make up the development are naturally ventilated and incorporate high performance windows to control solar heat gain. Additionally, native drought-tolerant landscaping and reclaimed water irrigation have been used throughout Palo Verde to decrease potable water usage.
